Profile

Janine Good has been a practicing artist for more than 30 years.

Her major focus is painting and drawing, but printmaking and sculpture are also part of her creative vision. She lives and shares her painting studio with her musician partner in Drouin Gippsland about an hour east of Melbourne Victoria on a couple of acres with wild rambling gardens surrounded by pasture. They have two adult children and recently became proud grandparents.

She produces works of semi-abstract imagery that through a process of visual layering takes on Surreal elements, incorporating the phenomenon called Pareidolia where imagined figurative elements can appear through inanimate objects, usually in organic forms like wood and rock. During the painting process contemporary and personal narratives influence the direction of the artwork.

Janine is accomplished at figurative themes including portraiture. She has produced more than 40 portraits in recent years. Other themes are ritual in ordinary life, Melbourne’s vibrant music culture, the natural world, and explorations of motherhood – all themes that reflect lived experiences.

“I feel proud to practice a cultural expression integral to human existence. I have an enduring love of Art History and my influences have been many and varied. I love the ordinary themes and painterly, colourful works of Lucy Culliton, the textural surfaces of Mandy Martin but also the looseness and surprise of Elisabeth Cummings, to focus on women painters in Australia, because they have largely been overlooked through art history.

Since 2006 to the present, I have been painting instructor at the Pakenham Living Learning Community Centre where I am able to share my knowledge and passion for Art and connect with a diverse community. My most recent project has been Facilitating Creative Recovery for bushfire affected communities in my local region during 2020-2022, providing some timely assistance for the community during Covid lockdowns, with good outcomes including visual awareness workshops and facilitating some creatively enhanced public spaces for community engagement.”
